PCOS
Description
Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is a condition usually characterized by menstrual abnormalities and higher than normal levels of male hormones. Multiple small cysts may develop on the ovaries. Features of PCOS may occur at any age and can include:
- Excessive hair growth
- Infertility
- Menstrual abnormalities
- Obesity
- Glucose intolerance
Women with PCOS are at higher risk of diabetes, metabolic syndrome, cardiovascular disease and high cholesterol. Lifestyle changes such as diet and exercise are important in the treatment but other treatments include the oral contraceptive pill, and diabetes medications. Infertility can be treated successfully by diet and exercise, ovulation stimulation with or without metformin, and ovarian drilling laparoscopically.
