A colposcopy is an examination of the cervix, vagina or vulva using a magnifying microscope to check for signs of disease and this is often recommended if you have had an abnormal Pap smear. If an abnormality is seen Dr Marshall may need to take a tiny biopsy (piece of tissue) at the time of the colposcopy. Dr Marshall provides colposcopic assessments at his practice in Frankston.

The procedure may be uncomfortable but usually does not cause any significant pain. However it is usually a good idea to take a couple of Panadeine before coming for your appointment.

If treatment is required, Dr Marshall uses CO2 laser vapourisation to remove the abnormal zone of the cervix and this can be performed under local anaesthetic or a light general anaesthetic in the hospital. Studies have shown that CO2 laser treatment gives the best healing and the least complications.  The cure rate is 98%.
